At the Heart of Giving Back

In early September, more than 50 Delmarva Power employees and their family members got their hearts pumping on the Wilmington waterfront during the three-mile American Heart Association Heart Walk. The Heart Walk is an opportunity to honor and remember loved ones impacted by heart-related diseases while also striving to get active, fit and healthy.

Jeff Miles, manager of Gas System Control and Plant Operations, led our Delmarva Power team, which was comprised of walkers and event volunteers who raised nearly $13,000, placing us among the top.  Miles also was recognized as an Executive Challenge winner for his individual efforts that raised more than $3,000.

“The Heart Walk touches so many people, not only raising awareness and funds for much needed research but also helping to fund youth programs that educate students on the importance of healthy eating and staying active,” said Miles. “As a dad, it is so important to me to make sure my children and today’s youth are receiving healthy meals and understand that keeping active and fit is a key to a heart healthy life.”group photo

Many participants have been impacted by heart related diseases personally or in their family and know the significance that events like the Heart Walk have for our communities.

“My dad is a heart attack survivor and to work for an organization like Delmarva Power that cares about its employees and the community’s health means a lot to me,” said Miles. “We have so many programs internally to promote healthy living and educate our employees to stay active and make smart choices. Our support of the Heart Walk is another great testament to that commitment.”

We are a proud event sponsor and, since 2014, have provided the American Heart Association more than $240,000 in support through events like the Heart Walk, Wilmington Heart Ball, and Wilmington Go Red for Women Luncheon.

We are committed to making a difference in the communities where we live and work. In 2018, our employees volunteered nearly 16,000 hours to help more than 460 organizations throughout Delaware and Maryland—that’s equal to volunteering more than 2,000 work days!
