Volunteer Focus: Helping Support South Jersey’s Homeless

This National Volunteer Month, we’re bringing a few of our volunteers to you. Meet Jamiil Garcia, who volunteers his time at the Atlantic City Rescue Mission.

Q: Tell us about your role at the company and how long you have worked here?

A: I work as a distribution construction supervisor at our operations center in Cape May Court House, N.J. I have been an avid volunteer since joining the company in April 2011, participating in many of Atlantic City Electric’s volunteer initiatives held throughout the year. I always enjoy participating in our volunteer programs, helping organizations that benefit those who need it most.

Q: Which organization do you personally volunteer with the most?

A: I volunteer most of my time with the Atlantic City Rescue Mission. When spending time at the rescue mission, I prepare food for residents of the mission and for those who need a good meal. The lunch prep typically consists of about 15 of our employee volunteers cooking and serving food to about 75 to 100 people. The rescue mission never closes and serves residents in need each and every day.

Q: What motivates you to give back?

A: I truly enjoy helping others and this stemmed from my parents always encouraging me to help those in need. What I enjoy most is seeing the smile on someone’s face and the appreciation they have after receiving a hot meal. This to me is well worth the small investment of my time as a mission volunteer.

In 2018, Atlantic City Electric employees volunteered more than 21,000 hours to help about 300 unique organizations throughout southern New Jersey. That’s equal to volunteering 2,600 work days. These contributions are part of our continued commitment to powering communities and being a good corporate citizen for the areas where we live and work.
